What Makes Math Different from Other Subjects?
Unlike most other classes, math is cumulative throughout a student’s entire K-12 education. Students who fall behind at any point in math may find their gaps exposed year after year, and these gaps can make it more challenging to learn new concepts, thereby compounding the problem. Many capable students who do not understand why they are struggling often assume they are simply bad at math and develop a general aversion to it. However, we have never met a student who is universally bad at all aspects of math, and we aim to give students the tools to understand math deeply while filling past knowledge gaps instead of just helping them muddle through their current assignments. In doing so, we aim to empower them to achieve math success in their current and future classes.
Math is not just a series of facts to be memorized—successful students have to not only remember some essential formulas but also understand the concepts and skills well enough to be able to solve problems with variations they have never encountered before. Unfortunately, without individualized attention, some students struggle to develop this deeper understanding, while others may not be challenged enough by the standard course material.
Why One-on-One Tutoring?
Pinpointing and fixing knowledge gaps is essential to successfully navigating current and future math classes. However, a group or classroom setting makes it very difficult to identify each individual student’s stumbling blocks and to give appropriate support and review assignments. A good one-on-one tutor, one the other hand, is able to diagnose and fill in holes in a student’s math education that may be holding the student back.
For a student who feels that the coursework is too easy, a tutor can provide more accelerated and challenging instruction to extend the student’s knowledge beyond the current course material.
What Makes Study Smarter’s Math Tutoring Unique?
Study Smarter has tutored math since our inception in 1997, both in an academic setting and on standardized tests. We have experience working with both public and private school curricula in the San Francisco Bay Area and nationwide. Over the years, we have coached thousands of students, ranging from people failing their classes to people already acing tests who wanted to extend their knowledge beyond their curriculum. Having this extensive experience gives us a unique perspective on what pieces of the puzzle need to be put in place in order to be successful at all levels of math.
Our vast knowledge and experience give us unparalleled insight into diagnosing what makes material difficult for a student—the current concept or the underlying arithmetic, algebra, or other building-block skills that a student may have missed in previous classes. When we do identify these underlying issues, we can work with students to shore up their foundations and move forward in their classes instead of feeling that they are always playing catch-up.
We love to see students go from feeling hopeless and discouraged to feeling empowered that they can solve math problems and overcome other seemingly difficult challenges! Please contact us for more information.
